Abu Dhabi Airports, in alliance with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP), is pushing the boundaries of technology to enhance passenger convenience at Zayed International Airport. This pioneering initiative, dubbed the Biometric Smart Travel project, leverages cutting-edge biometric systems to refine airport operations and simplify traveller verification without the need for prior registration.
Following the unveiling of a state-of-the-art terminal at Zayed International Airport in November 2023, the airport has benefitted from the introduction of seamless biometric systems; these incorporate automatic traveller registration, facial recognition technology at boarding gates and e-gates, as well as self-service baggage facilities. The current development phase is set to extend these systems to five additional airlines and improve transit area efficiency with advanced e-gates for swift biometric registration. Future projections even include extending the reach of the project to incorporate Etihad Airways lounges and duty-free shopping precincts.
Andrew Murphy, Chief Information Officer at Zayed International Airport, spoke of his pride at executing “this groundbreaking project at our ultra-modern terminal through advanced biometric systems”. The ambitious project has been realised in partnership with Next50, experts in AI-infused transportation solutions. The project will inaugurate biometric systems across varying safety and management checkpoints throughout three stages.
Zayed International Airport flaunts its commitment to passenger service efficiency with the project reducing the time to serve travellers from 25 seconds to a notable 7 seconds. Transportation hubs worldwide are embracing biometric tech, which bolsters security and expedites passenger processing.
